Canon CLI-521 GY Grijs inktcartridge
The Canon CLI-521 GY delivers smooth grayscale transitions and professional black-and-white prints with your compatible Pixma printer.
If you own an older high-end Canon Pixma printer and print photos regularly, the original CLI-521 grey cartridge is a reliable, albeit pricey, choice for color-accurate black-and-white prints.
Reasons to buy
- Excellent grayscale tones for black-and-white photography
- Original Canon quality prevents clogged printheads
- ChromaLife100+ system for long-lasting color preservation
Watch-outs
- Relatively high price per milliliter of ink
- Only compatible with a select few older Pixma models
Why grey is essential for photo printers
Unlike standard printers that mix grey from cyan, magenta, and yellow, a printer with a dedicated grey cartridge like the CLI-521 uses pure grey ink. This prevents unwanted green or purple color casts in your black-and-white photos and ensures smoother transitions in shadows.
Reliability of original ink
While third-party alternatives are cheaper, the original Canon CLI-521 cartridge guarantees that the ink formula is perfectly matched to the thermal printhead of your Pixma printer. This minimizes the risk of clogging, which is especially important if you don't use the printer daily.
Frequently asked questions
Which printers are compatible with the Canon CLI-521 GY?
This cartridge is suitable for specific older Canon Pixma models that use a 5- or 6-ink system, such as the Pixma MP980 and MP990. Always check your printer's manual before purchasing.
What is the difference between CLI-521 and PGI-520?
The PGI-520 is a larger cartridge with pigment black ink, primarily used for text documents. The CLI-521 series (including this grey one) contains dye-based ink specifically designed for photo paper.
